On this day that embodies the shameless commercialism of romantic expression, whilst awaiting the delivery van’s imminent arrival with my long stem roses and bottle of Billecart champagne, I like to spare a thought for those poor souls that are devoid of such grandeur displays of affection. It must take a great degree of self-control for those unattached types not to savagely assault the masses of happy couples flaunting their undying love for one another over candlelit dinners and what not today.
Whilst it has been some years since I endured a solo Valentine’s Day, it is not without some sympathy, and a bit of jealousy, that I regard my single friends’ feelings today. There was a time that unrequited love was a staple part of my makeup (along with a healthy dose of contempt for authority and a smart-ass streak that rivaled the very smartest of asses!) In fact, in my 20s, being single and in lust was definitely preferable to being caught up in the monotony of love! And whilst, as Neil Sedaka put it, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, there is always that sensational feeling of freedom that comes with a newly single lifestyle.
So, this Valentine’s Day , unlike my love song dedication post from last year, I have compiled my Dirty Dozen Songs For The Brokenhearted. It is dedicated to all my single friends out there, and to those that enjoy the passion of a breakup ditty over the schmaltz of a love ballad. To enjoy it to its full extent, I suggest to play it loud, accompanied by a large bottle of your favourite poison, and dance like no one’s watching in your living room… because let’s face it, there probably is no one watching- unless you have inadvertently left your webcam on from your previous Tinder session!

2. Fuck You- Cee Lo Green
3. Everyday I Love You Less and Less- Kaier Cheifs
