Letting Go in Mornington:
Let Go Fest- Saturday 4 February, Mornington Racecourse
It’s official- I’m starting to feel old….er when I go to music festivals. I must admit, it had been a while since I’d attended a music festival prior to heading along to Let Go Fest earlier this month. My annual pilgrimage to Big Day Out came to an abrupt halt in 2014 with the shock announcement that the festival was to be no more, and since then, I’ve been at a bit of a loose end, festival-wise. Whilst there’s still a plethora of choices of mega-headline music festivals to attend in Australia, it’s the smaller boutique events that have sprouted up recently that have captured my interest.
It’s easy to get turned off the larger EDM-based music festivals as you reach an age where salt and pepper is more about your hair colour than something you put on your dinner. Understandably so, when the mere mention of certain festivals invokes images of steroid-laden shirtless lads, drunken obnoxious yoofs, and duck-faced self-obsessed Kardashian clones……. Yeah, nah!
Thankfully, Let Go Fest proved to be the true antithesis of that type of festival.
Have you checked out Soundcloud yet? Just in case my recent review of Soundcloud didn’t provide enough inspiration, allow me to pop a metaphorical cherry on top of the Soundcloud sundae via a trusty Top 10 playlist of my favourite Soundcloud mixes. All of the mixes below have been thoroughly road-tested and conveniently categorised into ideal listening environments. Check them out and see if you agree… Better yet- start your own Soundcloud journey and let me know some of your favourite finds.
Finding it hard to distinguish between your dubstep and brostep? Always getting your techno and trance mixed up? Well, fear not! This week marks the first of several posts in which I attempt to give some insight into various EDM (electronic dance music) genres. Each post will focus on a specific EDM genre- delving into its history; looking at some of the top DJs/producers in the field; and some of my favourite artists.
It’s only midway through Thursday but I’m already dreaming of the weekend…. Actually, truth be told, I’ve been engrossed with this coming weekend for a while now. It promises to be somewhat of an epic event for a number of reasons…. First- I’m kid-free, and that is always cause for kicking the old heels up. Second, it’s the end of Feb-fast- a whole month of no alcohol for me- which I plan to celebrate achieving with a good old fashioned binge drinking session. And lastly, but by no means least, I’m traveling up to Sydney with my better half and best mate to attend a joint milestone birthday celebration for two close friends. All week I’ve been looking forward to the moment when I can joyously exclaim those unforgettable words from Human Traffic…. “The weekend has landed!” And whilst the anticipation is killing me- the constant “Are we there yet?” permeating my thoughts like a case of gastro in a childcare center, there is something kind of fun about the lead up to a big event- especially if it is highlighted with a killer soundtrack.
